Wood Specialist and Construction Company

COMPANY BACKGROUND AS GIVEN

The wood business was started and held by the father for 40 years prior to the son taking over. The son ran the business for 15 years in Athens before moving to Evia. The son claims to have been involved in building projects in France, Finland and Turkey. The son and his primary assistant claim the only other person/company capable of doing what they do on the island is one man in Chalkida.

The business has no address or website, only a sticker on the side of a van and a business card.

PROBLEM: During heavy rain periods there is a minor roof leak into the main building

Company Solution

Remove blocked air-vent and surrounding tiles. Replace air-vent and re-tile. They were waiting for the air-vent ordered to arrive and the company owner later stated the work was complete.

Cost

€500

Despite numerous reminders the work was never done

Air-vent and tiles removed. Soft cover tacked on-top which easily came off with the wind exposing the roof and had become rodent infested.

Result

Had to have a proper roofer come in to repair the roof and seeking action against the this company to recover the money paid.

PROBLEM: Rebuild the Main Hall overhang angled downwards and make it rain-proof

Company Solution

Sand down and add insect and weathering treatment to existing framework. Add new wood beams and treat accordingly. Finally, add bamboo and plastic rain covering which they claimed would last 2-3 years.

Result

The company did not sand down and refinish the existing wood framework as stated. They added the new wood beams, added the bamboo and bought some more that was not actually needed. Then they added the soft plastic cover which tore to pieces under the hot sun and wind. They claimed the plastic sheeting was UV rated and would not be affected by the sun. The wood pieces put on to hold it down came off and the plastic that tore into hundreds of tiny and medium sized pieces scattered all over the property, everyday for the past 8 months. The plastic has been found in the pool and in the pool filtration system. The wood beams have not been treated properly - all the ends are showing clear signs of weather damage and blackening.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THE DARK COLORED WOOD FRAMEWORK WAS DONE BY SOMEONE ELSE THE YEAR BEFORE ALONG WITH 15 OTHER WOOD BEAMS THAT ARE LAYING OPENLY IN THE YARD FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS. THESE ARE ALL STILL FINE AND SHOWING NO SIGN OF WATER OR WEATHER DAMAGE. THE PEOPLE THAT MADE THESE BEAMS HAD LITTLE TO NO EXPERIENCE WITH WOOD PRODUCTS.

THE LIGHTER COLORED BEAMS THAT THE "WOOD SPECIALIST" COMPANY INSTALLED ALL SHOWED WEATHER DAMAGE WITHIN ONLY 6 MONTHS. EVERYTHING THIS COMPANY MADE WITH WOOD IS SHOWING WEATHER DAMAGE ALTHOUGH THEY CLAIMED THAT ALL THESE WERE PROPERLY TREATED FOR BOTH INSECTS AND WEATHER.

PROBLEM: We needed some kind of containers for garbage bins at each building on the property

The boxes themselves turned out fairly well although I was charged extra for support hinges that were never bought or installed and the wood wasn't treated properly of at all. The lids on the containers are quite heavy and awkward to lift when trying to put garbage in or take out the bins so they agreed to install hydraulic support hinges at an additional cost. They only planned to put 1 hinge in the center of each large lid which would not work. I was charged €150 for the hinges for these containers that were never purchased or installed. It should be noted they did the same with pool and spa control rooms trap doors. These were very poorly installed and their own installer broke them. Although the business owner stated he would would fix them, nothing has been done.

PROBLEM: Moisture has been penetrating the concrete flat roof areas on all buildings

Company Solution

Remove previous weather-proofing, clean, add primer and reseal with a long lasting protective coating.

Result

Several of the buildings were done well although rushed. The roofs were not given enough time to properly dry after the old weatherproofing had been removed. After the roofs were re-treated and the inside ceilings were re-painted, residual moisture still in the concrete seeped though leaving water stains on the ceilings inside. This is particularly bad in the main building. This was explained with a promise to repaint by the service company owner. Nothing was ever done. The main building also has a definite leak where the old weather-proofing was not all removed and simply covered with the new sealant. I suspect it also wasn't primed.

PROBLEM: Moisture has been penetrating the concrete flat roof areas on all buildings

Main Hall over-hang needed to be re-done. It needed to be angled downwards with a proper cover against rain. The over-hang already had bamboo as a cover and required an additional cover to stop the rain.
